Marcel Irnie Returns to Canadian Superbike Racing
Round 1, Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship, Shannonville Motorsports Park June 22-24, 2012

In the months preceding the start of the Mopar Canadian Pro Superbike Championship series, no one can say that Marcel Irnie didn’t put his work in. In an effort to hone his skills, Irnie attended several early season races including stops in Washington, Oregon, California and Utah. Add this to the countless gym sessions and the many hours on the phone courting sponsors made for little spare time in Irnie’s world. Promising early season results were marred by a heavy crash in California and a nagging electronics power delivery issue from his new BMW S1000RR in the last few tune-up races. This power delivery issue was still present and weighing heavily on his mind as he left Kelowna, BC for the long 55 hour journey to Ontario.

Thunderhill Raceway Park, May 12-13, 2012 & Miller Motorsports Park May 19-20, 2012

Marcel Irnie’s preparations for the 2012 Canadian Superbike Championships took another turn into the United States in May. This time he was traveling further than the usual regional races in Washington and Oregon. In his effort to build speed and become battle-hardy, Irnie ventured to Northern California for an American Federation of Motorcyclists (AFM) event at Thunder Hill Raceway Park near Willows, California. Followed by the WERA West Nationals event at Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City, Utah. The notoriously fast competition and technical race courses would be very helpful in advancing his 2012 program.

Youtube: http://youtu.be/6UNzPLlum_M

Kelowna BC’s Marcel Irnie journeyed to Portland, Oregon to participate in another West Coast race as he prepares for the 2012 Canadian Superbike Championships. The tough competition and early season start are vital to Irnie’s efforts to ready himself for what will be the toughest season of his career. For this round, Irnie brought both his trusty Dave Alexander-prepared 2005 Kawasaki zx6rr and his awe-inspiring 2012 AMSOIL Bentley Motorrad BMW S1000RR.

WMRRA Round 1, Pacific Raceways, Mar. 30-Apr. 1, 2012
Youtube:  http://youtu.be/4fDDeYEunXs

Marcel Irnie’s race program held many changes for 2012 and the Kelowna BC native hopes that this will be a watershed season for his racing career. The first major change was the acquisition of a 2012 BMW S1000RR. As Irnie has battled with under-powered, dated machinery throughout his career, having a motorcycle that possess elite horsepower and handling would be a welcome change. Irnie will race the "AMSOIL T1000 Uber-bike" in the complete Canadian Superbike Championship, starting in June.

Irnie kicked off what will be a long campaign at the Washington Motorcycle Road Racing Association’s opening round at Pacific Raceways. Despite weather forecasts of perpetual rain, Irnie was anxious to get race hours in and use this opportunity to put the BMW through its paces.

Vote for Marcel Irnie in Champion Spark Plug Video Contest

There’s no question that motor racing on any level is a very expensive endeavor.  When you reach the upper echelons like superbike racer Marcel Irnie, putting together a budget for a full racing season is a daunting task. For 2012, Marcel is planning to race the Pro class  of the Canadian Superbike Championship,  as well as a few rounds of the US AMA Pro Superbike series. Racing at this level will require a lot of sacrifice and most importantly sponsorship.

Irnie has entered a video in a sponsorship contest being held by Champion Spark Plug. Racers of virtually every motor racing discipline can submit a video and have the chance to win the grand prize of a $50000 sponsorship package or one of five $10000 consolation sponsorship packages. If you can take the time, please view Marcel’s video and then create a log-in and vote.
Here is the link.  (Voting Period Ended.  It's a no go :()

We have been working with Marcel for several years now and certainly recognize the hard work he has put in. He produces popular race videos and works hard to promote his sponsors. He would certainly be a worthy winner of this contest, were he lucky enough to be chosen.  He is on the verge of a break-out season in the pro ranks, so this assistance would be helpful.

OMRRA Round 7, October 8-9, 2011, Portland International Raceway, Portland OR.

The 2011 season for Irnie Racing was one wrought with ups, downs and everything in between. For most of the season Marcel Irnie played “catch-up”, trying to stay with the competition on woefully underpowered motorcycles. Irnie achieved several hard-earned top five finishes on machinery that had no business being up front. The highlight of the season was most certainly the two first pro victories of his career. With a tough season almost in the books, Irnie looked to close out the season in Portland with a good result and get on with the business of reloading for 2012.

WMRRA Round 8, Pacific Raceways, Kent, WA Oct 1-2, 2011

As the 2011 race season draws to a close, Marcel Irnie and Aaron Holmberg of Irnie Racing looked to finish the final round of WMRRA season on an upbeat note. This year had been turbulent for Irnie as he had been battling nagging injuries early on and unreliable machinery for much of the year. Irnie and Holmberg would be sharing Aaron’s stock Suzuki GSXR 750 tuned by Nel's from 2wheeldynoworks. Irnie also picked up a 2003 Yamaha R6 from sponsor Redline Motorsport of Tacoma. Irnie would use this bike as a backup and try his hand in the TFS class.

WMRRA Round 7, Pacific Raceway, September 10-11, 2011

Marcel Irnie’s 2011 race season has been tumultuous to say the least. He has had the highs of his first professional victory and the lows of many mechanical gremlins.  There has been much uncertainty regarding equipment and where his future lies in the sport.  Over the course of this season, Irnie has raced on no less than five different motorcycles; with only one of them being fully competitive. The uncertainty followed Irnie to Washington State as he opted to take part in this round using teammate Aaron Holmberg’s Suzuki GSXR 750 for the weekend.

OMMRA Round 4, Portland International Raceway, July 16-17, 2011

In the week preceding Round 4 of the Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association (OMRRA) series at Portland, Marcel Irnie had no intention of even attending the event. The motor in his 2005 zx6rr was blown and his chronically under-powered 2008 zx6 was going up for sale. Marcel was looking forward to dirtbiking after the recent rain storm in Kelowna BC.  When he finished editing his video from OMMRA round 3 (Trail Blazers), he sent it over to David at Redline Motorsports.  When David heard that Marcel would not be making the trip out to Oregon for round 4, he made an offer that soon turned into an exciting opportunity for Irnie. Redline had a 2008 CBR1000RR available and offered it to Marcel for the weekend. Irnie had never ridden a 1000cc Superbike, not to mention a Honda, but he was anxious to take Redline up on the offer. His 600cc machines were not only uncompetitive; they were also becoming increasingly unreliable. This would be Irnie’s chance to prove himself on competitive machinery.

David Slater and Marcel Irnie celebrate winning Formula Ultra at Portland International Raceway July 17, 2011.  This was Irnie's first experience riding a 1000cc superbike, not to mention a Honda.  With only one practice session in the wet, Marcel put down the fastest lap time...
1:23.005.  Irnie continued the fast trend with the fastest lap in the race, a 1.19.105 on the IrnieRacing Superbike.  On the Friday trackday, Irnie put down a 1.08.200 in the dry after only three 15-minute practice sessions.  All with used takeoff tires ofcourse.   :)      This is Marcel Irnie's first Pro win.

Check out on-track photos by Ryan Phillips below.  (click Read More...)
As per usual, Marcel filmed all the action with his trusty GoPro HD cameras.  See Full press release and Irnie's HD video documentary, "Pacific Wonderland."
